Emergency Kits

Build Your Kit!
You can use a backpack, duffle bag, or covered trash container to build your kit.  Store items in sealed plastic bags to preserve them.

Store water in plastic containers and try to stock one gallon per person per day.  It is recommended that you keep at least 3 days worth.

Keep a 3-day supply of non-perishable food items that do not require refrigeration or cooking.  Make sure if you stock ready to eat canned foods that you have a non-electric can opener.  Don't forget things like infant formula and food for your pets.

First Aid Kit
You should have a first aid kit for your home and your car.  These are easy to find and should contain things like adhesive bandages, gauze, gloves, antiseptic wipes, anti-bacterial ointment, aspirin, tweezers/scissors, cold packs, etc.

Don't forget to keep a supply of daily medicines and prescription drugs.   Also don't forget things like eye glasses, denture needs, hearing aids/batteries, contact lenses, etc.  Keep a written list of all your medications.

Flashlights, radios, whistles, and other supplies/tools will be very useful in an emergency, especially if there is no electricity.  Make sure to stock extra flashlights and a battery-operated radio, along with extra batteries.  Other things to consider include a local map, extra cash (no ATMs), matches, pliers, plastic plates/utensils, shut-off wrench for utilities.

Infants and Children
Keep things like coloring books and stuffed animals that can be used to comfort your children during an emergency.  Remember to stock formula, diapers, bottles, and other necessary items for your infants.

Don't forget the pets!  Stock extra food and water for your pets as well as extra leashes, a toy, etc.
Other Things to Consider
  • Sanitation supplies: soap, toiler paper, personal hygiene items, disinfectant, etc.
  • Clothing and bedding: one complete change of clothing per person, rain gear, sturdy shoes, etc.
  • Special items: books, games, coloring books for children, etc.

Remember to monitor your kit.  Replace your stored food, water and medicine as they expire.  Also be sure to evaluate your kit needs and add things as necessary.
