Outstanding Parks and Recreation Facility

Nicholl Skate Plaza

The first phase of the Nicholl Skate Plaza was completed and opened for use Wednesday, October 21, 2009.  The design of the skate plaza was developed through community input and the assistance of the youth that planned on becoming not only users but stewards of the plaza area.  In an effort to create a skate plaza that was not your typical concrete slab, the project concentrated on utilizing the existing trees.  The grand opening coincided with the official City of Richmond Arbor Day Celebration and with the help of Mayor Gayle McLaughlin and a variety of skateboarding youth, 6 additional coastal redwood trees were added.

Certificate of Appreciation

"On behalf of the Richmond City Council, we, Mayor Gayle McLaughlin and Councilmember Nat Bates, would like to thank Project Coordinator Kris Lofthus and the Recreation Department staff that worked diligently on the successful Independence Day festivities on July 3, 2009.  The event was spectacular and created an atmosphere that our community members and visitors could celebrate and enjoy.  Your hard work and professionalism is greatly appreciated."
