FREE Mattress Drop-off Program for Residents
The City Manager’s Office, Community Development, Environmental and Health Initiatives Division is pleased to announce residents of Richmond, Hercules, Pinole, San Pablo, El Cerrito and unincorporated communities are now eligible to bring three (3) mattresses per month to the West Contra Costa County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at no cost. Please bring proof of residency.

- Excessively wet, damaged, partial or soiled mattresses or mattresses with bed bugs

- Air mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows, mattress toppers or other furniture
Call Republic Services at (510) 231-4200 for additional information. For a fee, businesses can dispose of mattresses at the Golden Bear Transfer Station.
Single-Family/Duplex Curbside Bulky and Bagged Item Pick-Up
Richmond residents can receive two on-call curbside cleanups per calendar year:
1. Bulky Item: Pick-up of up to three (3) eligible items which can include up to five (5) E-waste as one (1) bulky item
2. Bagged Item: Pick-up of up to fifteen (15) 35-gallon bags of non-hazardous residential household trash, or ALL yard wastes only
Please contact Republic Services, (510) 262- 7100, at least one week in advance to reserve your Clean-up day. Collection services are provided by Republic Services at no additional cost. Due to space limitations of our waste collection vehicles, Clean-up day scheduling will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
1. Bulky Item Service
Program Guidelines:
- Single-family residences and duplexes only.
- Up to 3 household bulky items per clean-up.
- Up to 5 e-waste (electronic waste) items such as computer monitors, microwaves, computers, or similar sized E-waste items can substitute for one bulky item per clean-up.
- A Holiday Tree can be substituted for one bulky item
- Residential household items only.
- Individual items of 200 pounds or less.
- No commercial-sized appliances, household hazardous waste, toxic, explosive, infectious, construction or demolition waste
Regularly accepted bulky items include:
- Appliances such as a washing machine, clothes dryer, dishwasher, stove, refrigerator, freezer, microwaves;
- Mattress & box springs (a matched set of mattress and box springs count as one item);
- Furniture such as a sofa, love seat, large chair, televisions, dining set, desks, dressers, tables or lawn furniture (a dining or lawn furniture set of table and chairs counts as one time);
- Equally sized residential items such as a water heater, barbecue, area rug, office chair, bookshelf, exercise equipment or four tires (four tires count as one item).
2. Bagged Item Service
Program Guidelines:
- Maximum pick-up of 15 bags of all garbage or all green waste.
- Keep the load limited to fifteen 30-35 gallon bags (2 cubic yards total), each under 40 pounds, and strong enough to hold materials.
- Ensure there are no large or bulky items in the load.
- Trash Clean-ups are collected on the customer's regular Solid Waste collection day; All Yard Waste Clean-ups are collected on the regular green waste collection day.
- Compostable paper bags must be used for all Yard Waste Clean-ups (biodegradable bags are not compostable)
Items that will not be accepted for Bagged On-Call Clean-ups:
- Car parts
- Boxed/ bundled debris
- Cement, rocks, dirt
- Fencing
- Glass
- Household Hazardous Waste
- Metal parts
- Tied boards
- Tree stumps
Holiday Tree Disposal and Recycling Options
Residents have several options to properly dispose of holiday trees. Please read the flyer below for how to dispose of holiday trees. For additional information call, Republic Services at 510-262-7100.
1. Curbside Collection / Recolección en la Acera:
On any of your regular organic waste collection days, cut your natural, unflocked Christmas tree to fit in your organic waste cart. Trees must be 6 feet or less in diameter and cut into 3-foot lengths. Remove stand and all decorations. Artificial, flocked and ornament-contaminated trees are not compostable. Cut or trim to fit in the brown or black trash cart and set out on any regular trash collection day.
En cualquier día de su servicio regular de recolección de desecho verde, corte su árbol natural sin escarcha de tal tamaño que pueda caber en el bote de desecho verde. Los árboles deben ser de 6 pies o menos de diámetro y en cortes 3 pies de largo. Quite la base y todos los adornos del árbol. Los árboles artificiales, con escarcha y contaminados de adornos no son compostables. IMPORTANT GUIDELINES FOR COMPOSTING HOLIDAY TREES:
➢ Remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, nails and stands.
➢ No flocked, painted, fireproof or artificial trees or trees contaminated with decorations, stands or plastic/cloth wrappings.
➢ If trees are more than 6 feet tall, please cut in half.
PAUTAS IMPORTANTES PARA EL COMPOSTAJE DE ÁRBOLES FESTIVOS:
➢ Quite todas las luces, decoraciones, oropel, clavos y los soportes del árbol.
➢ No se aceptan los árboles con escarcha, pintados, preparados contra fuego, artificiales o contaminados de adornos, soportes o envolturas de plástico o tela.
➢ Si los árboles miden más de 6 pies de altura, córtelos por la mitad.
2. On-call Bulky Pick-up / Recogido de Objetos Voluminosos por Llamada:
If you have not already used your allocated on-call curbside bulk cleanup(s), call our Customer Service office (510.262.7100) to arrange for a no-cost curbside pickup. Trees more than 6 feet tall must be cut in half.

If you are unable to cut/trim your compostable tree to fit in your organic waste cart or non-compostable tree (artificial, flocked, contaminated with ornaments, stands, plastic, cloth-wrapped) in the brown or black trash cart, call our Customer Service office to arrange “for fee” curbside collection (approximately $21.63/tree). On-call and “for fee” pickups must be scheduled in advance by calling 510.262.7100.
Si usted no puede cortar / recortar su árbol natural compostable para que pueda caber en su bote de desecho verde o cortar su árbol no compostable (artificial, con escarcha, contaminado con adornos, bases, envueltos en plástico o tela) llame a nuestra oficina de Servicio al Cliente para programar una recolección “Por Cuota” (aproximadamente $21.63/árbol). 4. Self-haul (Drop-off) / De Transporte Propio (Lleve su Árbol):
With proof of residency (driver’s license or CA ID), Republic Services customers can take trees to Golden Bear Transfer (#1 Parr Blvd., Richmond, Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) through the first weekend in February at no cost for compostable trees. There is a disposal fee for non-compostable trees or no proof of residency (approximately $12.15 - subject to change).

5. Donating to local Organizations / Donar a las Organizaciones Locales:
In addition to the above services, some local Boy Scout troops and youth organizations in Richmond collect Christmas trees in exchange for a donation.
