Academy


The Richmond Fire Academy consists of rigorous classroom and manipulative training over the course of sixteen (16) weeks. Topics in the academy consists of basic firefighting techniques and procedures, as well as emergency medical training. Other training may include but are not limited to:

  • Hose
  • Ladders
  • Live fire training
  • Hazardous material
  • Wildland firefighting
  • EMS
  • Confined space operations
  • Auto extrication
  • Rope rescue
  • Building construction
  • Hazardous Materials First Responder Operational (FRO)
  • Driver/Operator 1A
  • Incident Command System

Probation


Upon successful completion of the fire academy, a recruit becomes a Probationary Firefighter.  The probationary period is 18 months, where the Probationary Firefighter must successfully pass examinations at the 9th and 18th-month mark.
 
Probationary Firefighters are required to complete a number of didactic and manipulative exercises contained in the Probationary Handbook.  The Probationary Firefighter must research, practice and then demonstrate their knowledge on specified topics to a company officer. Once the company officer is satisfied the Probationary Firefighter has demonstrated a working knowledge of the subject, he or she is signed off.
