Richmond Moves On-Demand Shuttle

Richmond Moves

On April 25, 2022, the City of Richmond, CA and Via, the global leader in TransitTech, launched Richmond Moves, the city’s first on-demand public shuttle service. Made possible through new grant funding from California Climate Investments, Richmond Moves expanded access to efficient, equitable, and sustainable transportation in the Richmond community, particularly for neighborhoods that are underserved by other mobility options.

The goal of Richmond Moves is to fill access gaps in Richmond’s transportation ecosystem, which has historically lacked intra-city transit options and been long challenged by heavily polluted air. The service enables residents to easily connect with key transit hubs in the region — such as Amtrak stations, BART stations, and the Richmond Ferry Terminal — without a private car. To underscore Richmond’s commitment to sustainability, the fleet includes all plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, which will reduce energy consumption.

Payment method requirement:

All riders are required to add a debit or credit card to their account to book Richmond Moves rides. Concession rides are still free, but we do charge $1 no-show and late cancellation fees.

You’ll need to enter your payment details with these simple steps:

  • In the app menu, tap Payment Methods
  • Add and save your debit/credit card details
  • Book your next ride!

Late cancel/no-show fees:

Change of plans? We get it. Please remember to cancel your ride as quickly as possible!

Canceling a ride at the last minute or not showing up causes delays for other riders. Effective immediately, no-shows will incur a $1 fee and failure to cancel an unneeded ride within 10 minutes of pickup will result in a $1 late cancellation fee.

Don’t need a ride anymore? Simply head to the Richmond Moves app, click the three dots on the bottom right of your screen, then tap  “Cancel Ride” at the bottom of the map.

As pioneers of the TransitTech category, Via’s mission is to expand access to efficient, affordable, and sustainable transportation. Via’s software enables organizations to digitize their existing transportation networks and launch new and innovative services, simultaneously lowering operating costs and increasing quality of service. Our software is used in over 500 communities in more than 35 countries worldwide.

About City of Richmond
The City of Richmond is committed to implementing clean transportation strategies and increasing transportation equity in Richmond’s SB 535 designated Disadvantaged Communities. The Richmond Transportation Department is primarily responsible for implementing programs that align with the Council-adopted First Mile Last Mile Strategic Plan, the Climate Action Plan as well as other State and regional plans and policies to enhance Richmond’s transportation network and to improve the environment through the reduction of local greenhouse gas emissions. For more information regarding transportation services call 510-620-6828.

Via’s intelligent algorithms allow riders to book an on-demand ride to a nearby transit hub, and then directs them to a “virtual bus stop” within a short walking distance. Riders enjoy quick, efficient shared trips that provide more flexibility than traditional transportation options with fixed routes and schedules.

Richmond Moves is funded through the new statewide Clean Mobility Options Voucher Pilot Program (CMO). The project is part of the California Climate Investments (CCI), a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment — particularly in disadvantaged communities. CMO is administered by CALSTART, in partnership with Shared-Use Mobility Center (SUMC) and the Local Government Commission (LGC).

About Clean Mobility Options
CMO is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health, particularly in disadvantaged communities. In this case, the funding provides zero-emission shared mobility options to under-resourced communities in California. CMO funding is available throughout California to eligible disadvantaged communities, as well as eligible tribal governments and affordable housing in low-income communities, to increase access to safe, reliable, convenient and affordable transportation options. For eligibility requirements, application information and to contact the technical assistance team, visit: www.cleanmobilityoptions.org.
