The City of Richmond is working to make neighborhood streets and key intersections safer for people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving. This page brings together the City’s neighborhood traffic calming program and several funded traffic safety improvement projects happening across Richmond.

Programs
Bike and PedestrianDevelops and improves infrastructure for non-motorized transportation, including bicycle lanes, shared-use paths, sidewalks, and pedestrian crossings, to enhance safety, comfort, and connectivity while implementing the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Action Plan. | Neighborhood Traffic CalmingIntroduces measures to reduce vehicle speeds and cut-through traffic in residential areas, enhancing safety and livability for neighborhood residents. Common measures include speed humps, speed tables, elevated crosswalks, median islands, and traffic circles to support safer crossings and calmer streets. | Traffic SafetyImplements measures to improve road safety for all users, including intersection modifications, signage, pavement markings, and other engineering solutions to reduce collisions. Projects are guided by collision data, community input, and adopted safety plans, and may include quick-build or capital improvements supported by local, regional, or grant funding. |

Bike and Pedestrian Program
This program advances safer walking and biking by implementing improvements such as sidewalks, crossings, bike facilities, and other infrastructure that supports the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Action Plan.

Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program
Managed by Public Works, this program improves neighborhood safety by addressing speeding and cut-through traffic. Using quick-build methods, we install safety features such as speed humps, traffic circles, median islands, and enhanced crosswalks to create a more walkable and livable environment for Richmond residents.

Traffic Safety Program
The City is advancing traffic safety improvements at locations across Richmond to improve safety for all road users. Projects are guided by community input, collision history, and adopted safety plans, and may include a range of engineering and operational improvements.
